WHY DO FROGS CROAK?
DOES THE HORSE SLEEP STANDING UP?
DOES THE COW DRINK MILK?
Have you ever wondered what the cow eats and why it produces milk?
Cows are animals that like to eat grass. Yes, yes, cows are herbivorous! This means that their favourite food is green plants such as grass, hay and forage. They have a special stomach that helps them digest these plants.
But why do cows produce milk? Well, cows produce milk to feed their little cows, called calves. When a cow has a calf, her body produces milk that is full of nutrients needed for the healthy growth and development of the calf. Does the cow drink its own milk? No, the cow does not drink its milk. But when it has a calf, it is the calf that drinks the milk of its mother, the cow, for the first few months of its life. This milk helps the calves to grow strong and healthy. What happens when the calf grows up? As the calf grows and becomes older, it stops drinking milk and starts eating the same things as its mother does, namely grass and other plants. What about the milk the cows produce? Cow’s milk is very healthy and tasty for humans! That’s why people collect milk from cows and use it to make all sorts of delicious things, such as cheese, yoghurt and ice cream. Now you know why cows produce milk and why they don’t drink it themselves. Cows are truly remarkable animals, aren’t they?
